Dinner on October Twenty-eight was actually organised.
âWhatâs the occasion?â Kateâs seductive voice came from the doorway, and after a quick transformation from my instant puddle of goo, I pulled myself together, then beamed across the sunflower in the vase, the table cloth, and the wine glasses that Iâd only just finished fussing with.
âItâs our anniversary.â I spun her gently and removed her jacket, hanging it on the back of a chair. âDo you want to have a shower first and get changed? Or have dinner now?â
Kate turned back around and curled her arms around my neck. âItâs not our wedding anniversary, sweetheart. Dinner now, by the way, thank you. So itâs the anniversary of what?â
My hands found her waist and I tugged her closer. âItâs our twenty-one month anniversary.â Then I backed out of her arms, moved into the centre of the kitchenâall of three stepsâand pretended to unfurl a scroll. âIt is written in the great book of anniversaries and other important dates that many people forget at their peril.â Kate slapped a hand over her mouth. âThat the twenty-first anniversary is an auspicious event.â I channelled Janine for a moment.
âAn auspicious event? I canât think of anything that should be celebrated in the twenty-first month.â
I pointed my finger. âWell, you havenât been reading the proper ancient scrolls.â She giggled, and I pointed again. âSo listen, and all will be revealed.â
Kateâs eyes sparkled as she pretended to zip her lips with her thumb and forefinger, then leaned her shoulder against the door frame. I cleared my throat importantly.
âTwenty-one months ago, in a land far, far away, at the bridge in the centre of town, a dashing almost middle-aged art teacher was minding her own business by surreptitiously sketching a beautiful woman completely without her consent. That woman was backlit and a choir of angels was singing.â Kate snorted and slapped her hand over her mouth again. âThe art teacher couldnât think of an excuse to approach the beautiful woman without embodying that personage known as creepy unexpected stalker.â Kate was gradually giving in to her laughter. âUntil!â I pointed to the ceiling, then took a step towards her. âUntil the sudden arrival of a saviour, riding gallantly through the crowd, heralding his arrival to one and all with the fine words, âcoming throughâ.â I stepped closer. âThis saviour was dubbed Chaos Man and I will be forever grateful for his appearance because twenty-one months ago, you threw a smoothie all over yourself and I found a reason to meet the most gorgeous woman in the world.â My next step brought me right into her space. âHappy anniversary, sweetheart.â
Her response was instantaneous. Laughter bubbled up from her chest and she slipped her arms about my neck, and I felt every shimmer of her happiness in my heart.
âI must find Chaos Man one day and thank him for creating such a perfect moment.â Kateâs eyes were still sparkling but I could tell that the sparkles were laughter and tears and love and everything that sparkles can be.
